Who was Victor Nurmi?
The developer who gave the isles their name. According to the state historical marker and FDOT's historic-bridge documentation, he bought the islands, first dredged in the 1920s, in 1944, deepened the canals, built about five miles of concrete seawalls and new landscaped streets, and replaced the bridges to Las Olas in 1948 with low concrete spans decorated with Moderne pedestals, urns and lettering.

Are the original 1948 bridges still there?
No. The 1948 bridges were replaced in 2015–2016. FDOT's review of the Fiesta Way replacement notes that each bridge is the only road connection to its island. A state historical marker, "Bridge of the Isles", erected in 2015 on East Las Olas Boulevard west of NE 20th Avenue, tells their story.

How do boats get from Nurmi Isles to the ocean?
From the north end of the canals. The south ends are closed by the low Las Olas Canal bridges, which FDOT describes as crossing a non-navigable canal. Boats head out via Rio Barcelona toward the Middle River and the Intracoastal Waterway, then south through the East Las Olas bascule bridge (24 feet reported closed clearance) and the SE 17th Street bascule bridge (55 feet) to Port Everglades. Controlling depths are not published here; check your canal and route on a current NOAA chart and a survey.

The SE 17th Street bridge opens on the hour and half-hour, except on weekdays other than federal holidays from 6:50 to 9:10 a.m. and 3:50 to 6:10 p.m., when it opens only on the hour.
